What You Should Know Before Moving Into Your First Apartment

Happy family moving house and carrying boxes

Moving into a new apartment can be exciting. It can give you a sense of independence and accomplishment. However, there are a number of things that you will have to do before you move into a new apartment. Below is a list of tips that will prepare you to move into your first apartment:

Budget

Before you move into your apartment, you will need to review your budget and determine how much you can afford. Ideally, you should not be spending more than 30 percent of your monthly income on rent. This means that if you are making $3,000 per month, then your rent should not exceed $1,000 per month.

When you are planning your budget, you should also think about all of your other expenses. This includes things such as utilities, food and transportation. You should have enough in your savings account to cover three months’ worth of expenses.

Read Your Lease Carefully And Know Your Rights

Your lease is an extremely important document. That is why you will need to take the time to read it thoroughly before you sign it. Ask your landlord to clarify anything that you do not understand. You should also find out about all of the rights that you have as a tenant.

Buy The Basics

You will probably be eager to furnish your new home. However, there is no rush to furnish and decorate your home. You have plenty of time. You should buy the basics that you need and worry about the rest later. Additionally, it is a good idea to purchase from thrift and secondhand stores.

Get Renters Insurance

Renters insurance is required by many property managers. However, even if it is not required, you should still get it. Renters insurance will cover your property if it is stolen or damaged. It also includes liability coverage.
